The brilliant theatre director Max Reinhardt wanted to bridge the "unemployed" time of the actors and singers.
His plan was to attract the most suitable people for every insinuation during the summer from all over Europe to Salzburg.
In doing this he reached the highest artistic level and it became natural for the big wide world to meet in Salzburg.
Apart from Reinhardt there were also two other prominent artists at the cradle of the Salzburg Festivals: the composer Richard Strauss and the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
In 75 years the Salzburg Festivals became a huge and internationally renowned theatre. In the last days of July and throughout August there are approximately 170 events with about 220,000 tickets sold. Apart from the big classical operas and plays the important works of our century are presented. In the concert sector too, the significant heritage is opposed to contemporary works.
