Mondsee Cathedral was once the heart of an important monastery and was founded in 748 A.D. on the ruins of a Roman settlement. It influenced the culture of the Salzkammergut for more than thousand years.
The oldest German translation of the Bible was written here - the Mondsee Matthew.
The pompous, baroque interior decoration was affected by the painter and sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler (1649-1723). Nowadays the mondsee cathedral is one of the most important art treasures of Austria because it is one of the oldest collegiate church. 2005 Mondsee Cathedral received the title of a papal Basilika minor.
In Mondsee Cathedral the film wedding between Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Baron von Trapp took place.
Maria, led by Liesl, walked down the aisle to meet the Baron von Trapp in front of the main altar.
The first time they filmed the wedding scene between the Baron von Trapp and Maria, there was nobody at the altar to wed them when they reached the top of the stairs - someone had forgotten to summon the actor playing the bishop. According to Julie Andrews, the real bishop of Salzburg is seen in the movie.

Maria von Trapp once in an interview said: "I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. . . . [B]y and by I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after."
